About Obitus (dos)
Obitus is an action role-playing game released in 1991 for the MS-DOS platform. It was developed by Scenario Developments and published by Psygnosis Limited. The game presents its world through a first-person perspective, a style shared with several other role-playing titles of its era.
Players assume the role of Wil Mason, a medieval history lecturer who finds himself transported to the fantasy realm of Middlemere. The primary objective is to uncover the secret behind his arrival in this land, which is divided under the rule of four rival brothers, and to find a means of returning home. Exploration is conducted in a first-person view that allows for smooth scrolling across eight directions when turning, as well as when moving forward, contributing to a sense of three-dimensional space. This is used to navigate the environments and progress through the story.
The gameplay integrates action sequences alongside the exploration. These segments shift to a horizontal scrolling perspective where the player controls Wil directly, using a bow to fight enemies while avoiding their attacks. Later stages introduce similar action-oriented exploration within castle settings, incorporating movement in four cardinal directions. The experience alternates between these combat-focused areas and the first-person exploration, structuring the player's progression through the world of Middlemere.
