Uncharted Waters: New Horizons is a historical simulation and role-playing game released in 1995 for MS-DOS. Players experience this period from a top-down, bird's-eye view perspective, controlling one of six distinct characters, each with their own storyline that intersects with the others.

The player commands a ship and its crew, with the primary goals of exploration, trade, and managing the fleet's finances. Gameplay is divided between sailing across a vast, open sea map and visiting ports. While sailing, players must navigate using wind and currents, maintain crew health, and discover new landmarks. In ports, they can visit various buildings like shipyards, taverns, and guild halls to trade goods, repair ships, gather information, and accept contracts. Earning gold through trade, completing guild missions, or other means is essential for funding voyages and keeping the crew paid and fed.

Naval combat shifts the game into a turn-based strategic mode. Players position their ships to line up cannon fire or maneuver to board enemy vessels. A special sequence occurs if the player's flagship engages the enemy's flagship, allowing the captains to duel in a side-view perspective. In these duels, players select from a set of combat maneuvers such as strike, thrust, or parry. This blend of open-world sailing, economic management, and tactical combat forms the core of the gameplay experience.
