About Motobug In Sonic 1 (beta)
I've been playing the beta version of Sonic 1 on the Sega Genesis, specifically looking at the Motobug enemy. This early build, developed and published by Sega, gives you a glimpse into the platformer before its final release. It feels like a piece of that early 90s console development period, where the rules were still being written.
You control Sonic the Hedgehog, running and jumping through Green Hill Zone. The main goal is to get to the end of the act, but the Motobug is one of the first robots you encounter. It patrols back and forth on a set path, and you have to either jump on it or roll into a spin attack to destroy it. The pacing is quick, and you learn to judge your jumps carefully to avoid its simple but persistent movement. Navigating past or through these early obstacles while maintaining your speed creates a satisfying rhythm.
