About Maniac Mansion: Day Of The Tentacle
Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle is a point and click adventure game released in 1993 for MS-DOS. Developed and published by LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC, it is a sequel to the earlier game Maniac Mansion. The game is presented from a side view perspective and combines elements of comedy, graphic adventure, and puzzle solving.
Players control three characters: Bernard, Hoagie, and Laverne, with the ability to switch between them at any time. The primary objective is to stop the mutated Purple Tentacle from taking over the world by traveling through time to prevent the initial contamination. Gameplay involves using a command interface at the bottom of the screen to interact with the environment. Characters can pick up items, use them on objects or people, and engage in conversations. A central mechanic allows the characters to send items between three different time periods, which is essential for solving puzzles. The game is structured around exploring the same physical location across the 18th century, the present day, and the 23rd century, with actions in one era often causing changes in another.
Progression is driven by solving inventory based and environmental puzzles, many of which require coordinating the efforts of all three characters across time. For example, an item hidden in the past may be found in a decayed or altered state in the future. The CD version of the game features full voice acting for all dialogue. The narrative and puzzle design are tightly integrated, with the player's manipulations of history directly affecting the story's outcome and the state of the game world.
