Magic Carpet is an action game released in 1994 for the MS-DOS platform. Developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts, it presents a first-person perspective set within a fantasy interpretation of the Middle East. The game is structured across fifty distinct levels, each referred to as a world, which consist of oceanic regions dotted with mountainous islands.

Players control a wizard riding a flying carpet, which allows for movement in three dimensions across the terrain. The primary objective in each world is to gather a required amount of mana, represented by golden spheres, to restore equilibrium and progress. To collect mana, the player must first cast a spell to raise a personal castle from the ground. This castle generates a balloon that automatically flies around the level gathering mana that has been claimed. The castle starts small and must be expanded by repeatedly casting the castle spell on it to increase its mana capacity. A top-down map is available for navigation at any time.

The levels are populated by monsters and rival mages who can attack the player. Defeating these enemies is often necessary, as they release mana upon defeat. For combat, the player has access to a variety of offensive spells such as fireballs, lightning bolts, and meteors. Additional spells become available through progression, enabling functions like healing, creating a protective shield, teleportation, summoning skeletal allies, and altering the landscape by forming volcanoes or splitting land masses. These systems of castle building, mana collection, and spell-based combat form the core of the gameplay loop across the game's worlds.
