About Lurid Land
Lurid Land is a puzzle solving video game released for MS-Dos in 1997. It was developed and published by Illusion Softworks, a studio later known for titles such as Hidden & Dangerous and Mafia. The game presents its action from a side view perspective across a series of discrete screens.
The player controls a magician character tasked with navigating each screen to locate and rescue prisoners. Progression requires the magician to reach specific exit points on every level, a structure reminiscent of games like Lode Runner. To achieve this, the player must solve environmental puzzles that often involve obtaining items such as keys. These keys are used to unlock the cages holding the prisoners, and all captives must be freed to complete a stage. The gameplay integrates elements of timing and precise movement, as players maneuver past obstacles and enemies to collect necessary items and reach their goals.
The game was built on a high resolution Windows compatible engine that included an option for network play. Each level functions as a self contained puzzle where the player must analyze the layout, plan a route, and execute the necessary actions to free every prisoner and advance. The primary systems involve spatial navigation, item collection, and logical sequencing to overcome the challenges presented on each screen.
