About Lotus: The Ultimate Challenge
Lotus: The Ultimate Challenge is a racing video game released for MS-DOS in 1993. Developed by Magnetic Fields and published by Gremlin Graphics Software Limited, it is an arcade-style driving game officially licensed by the British car manufacturer Lotus. The game presents its races from a behind-the-vehicle perspective, focusing on street racing across various urban and highway environments.
Players control a licensed Lotus sports car, competing to win races across thirteen distinct track types. These courses include motorways, night-time circuits, and routes interrupted by roadwork sections. The objective is achieved through two primary game modes: one involves racing against nineteen computer-controlled opponents, while the other is a time trial mode where the player races against the clock. Race structures vary, with some being point-to-point sprints and others consisting of multiple laps. The game also supports a two-player split-screen option for direct competition.
A notable feature of Lotus: The Ultimate Challenge is its integrated track editor, known as the RECS editor. This system allows players to design and build their own racing courses. The editor provides tools for customizing layouts and environments, enabling the creation of a vast number of unique tracks. This addition extends the game's content beyond its pre-designed circuits, offering a personalized racing experience.
