Lode Runner: The Legend Returns is a platform game released in 1994 for MS-DOS. Developed by Presage Software and published by Sierra On-Line, the title revives the core mechanics of the earlier Lode Runner series. It presents its action from a side view perspective and incorporates puzzle solving as a central element of its design.

Players control a character who must navigate through a series of single screen levels. The primary objective is to collect all the gold pieces scattered throughout a stage and then reach an exit point. Movement is hindered by hostile monks who patrol the environments; if caught, the player character is eliminated. To overcome obstacles and enemies, the player can dig holes directly into the terrain. These holes can trap enemies temporarily or create new pathways, but they also fill in after a short time. The game provides additional tools such as bombs for destroying certain blocks and a drill for penetrating stone floors, adding strategic options for navigating the increasingly complex layouts.

The game is structured into one hundred fifty single player levels, organized across ten distinct thematic worlds. These include environments like jungle caverns, ancient ruins, ice dungeons, and lava filled playgrounds. Progression involves completing each level in sequence within a world before moving to the next. A notable variation occurs in the Shadowlands world, where levels are shrouded in darkness and only a small area around the player is illuminated. Alongside the substantial single player campaign, the game includes thirty additional levels designed for two players to compete or cooperate. The two player version of the Shadowlands stages does not employ the same darkness mechanic found in the solo mode.
