Liero is a two-player action game released in 1999 for MS-DOS. The game presents a side-view perspective and takes place in environments composed of destructible terrain, with players navigating through dirt and around rock obstacles. Each match is a direct confrontation between two players, who control characters referred to as worms.

Players control a single worm, with the primary objective being to locate and eliminate the opponent. Movement involves digging through soft earth, jumping, and using a ninja rope tool to swing and climb across the stage. Before a match begins, each player selects a loadout of five weapons from a total arsenal of around forty options. This arsenal includes firearms such as uzis and shotguns, as well as various explosive devices like cluster bombs and nuclear weapons. All weapons have unlimited ammunition but require reloading after expending a clip, a process that leaves the player temporarily unable to fire. More potent weapons typically need reloading more frequently, sometimes after every shot.

Gameplay is structured around fast-paced, real-time battles within the fully destructible arena. During a match, weapon crates periodically appear, which can be collected to replace the player's currently selected weapon with a new one. The combat results in exaggerated visual effects, including copious amounts of blood when a character is hit. The game's systems emphasize constant movement, strategic use of the environment for cover or tunneling, and managing weapon reload times during engagements.
