Lemmings is a real-time puzzle game released in 1991 for the MS-DOS platform. It was developed by DMA Design Limited and published by Psygnosis Limited. The game presents a side view of its environments and tasks the player with guiding groups of small creatures through a series of hazardous levels.

The player controls a cursor to interact with the lemmings, who walk autonomously and will perish if they fall from heights or encounter other dangers. The primary objective is to ensure a required percentage of these creatures reach the level's exit. To achieve this, the player assigns specific skills from a selection at the bottom of the screen to individual lemmings. Available skills include Climbers for scaling vertical surfaces, Floaters for safe descent, and Bombers who explode to clear obstacles. Other abilities allow lemmings to build bridges, dig through terrain, or act as blockers to redirect the crowd.

Progression is structured across 120 levels, each with a distinct layout of traps, gaps, and barriers. The player must manage limited resources, as the number of lemmings, the percentage required for success, and the types and quantities of assignable skills vary per stage. Success depends on strategic timing and careful assignment of these functions to navigate the group through the environment before time runs out.
