King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella is a graphic adventure game released in 1988 for MS-DOS by Sierra On-Line, Inc. It is the fourth entry in the King's Quest series and features a fantasy setting. This installment introduced the series' first female protagonist, Rosella, and utilized the newer SCI engine, which offered more detailed visuals compared to earlier games. An alternate version using the older AGI engine was also made available.

Players control Rosella from a side view perspective, navigating her through a large, interconnected world using keyboard commands for movement and interaction. The primary objective is to retrieve a magic fruit from the distant land of Tamir to cure her ailing father, King Graham. To accomplish this, Rosella must first agree to help the fairy Genesta recover a stolen talisman from the witch Lolotte, as this assistance is the condition for her transportation to and from Tamir. Progression is driven by solving environmental puzzles, conversing with various characters who may aid or obstruct her, and collecting items. The game incorporates a day and night cycle, where certain actions or events are only possible during specific times, adding a layer of planning to the exploration.

The gameplay structure is non-linear, with no time limit, allowing for methodical exploration of the world. Players type text commands to have Rosella perform actions such as taking objects, using items, and talking to characters. A notable technical feature of this SCI version is that the game action pauses while the player is typing, providing unlimited time to formulate commands. The puzzles often require logical thinking and careful observation of the environment and its inhabitants to advance the story.
