In Search of Dr. Riptide is a side scrolling arcade action game released in 1994 for MS-DOS. Developed by MindStorm Software and published by Pack Media Company, Inc., the game is an action-adventure title played from a third person perspective. Players take on the role of a naval agent named Nick, whose mission is to locate and dismantle the secret undersea laboratory of the antagonist, Dr. Riptide.

The player controls Nick, who pilots a primary submarine through a series of underwater caverns. Progression through the game's levels typically requires collecting a green key to access the route to an exit. A core gameplay system involves managing two vehicles: the main submarine and a smaller, auxiliary craft called the JASON submersible. The JASON sub can navigate tight spaces inaccessible to the main sub and is used to evade certain environmental hazards. However, it operates on a limited power timer and must periodically return to the main sub to recharge. The main submarine can be upgraded through collected power ups, enhancing its torpedoes across four levels and granting access to a surfacing missile weapon. A utility allows both subs to attack at the same time.

Survival depends on maintaining an oxygen level, which can be replenished by collecting specific items or by surfacing with the main submarine. Players collect various items, with the main sub capable of picking up all types while the JASON sub is restricted to gathering treasures found floating or inside containers. Another system involves a trade off where collecting a shield item increases defense but reduces torpedo weapon power by one level. A special pulse cannon weapon, assembled by collecting four parts scattered across levels, consumes oxygen when used. Each episode culminates in a boss encounter where the player must repeatedly strike a weak point to achieve victory.
