About Hugo Ii: Whodunit?
Hugo II: Whodunit? is a detective and mystery adventure game released for MS-DOS in 1991. It was developed and published by Gray Design Associates as the second title in the Hugo series. The game presents its narrative and environments from a third-person perspective, following the established style of earlier graphic adventures.
The player primarily controls Penelope, the wife of the series protagonist Hugo, after the couple arrives at a relative's mansion. Following a strange sequence of events, Penelope witnesses a murder and must explore the mansion to gather clues and identify the culprit. Progression is achieved by typing text commands to interact with the environment, examine objects, and converse with characters, while using arrow keys to navigate the scenes. The gameplay involves solving a series of logic and inventory-based puzzles to uncover the mystery. Some puzzles have specific failure states that are not immediately apparent, potentially requiring the player to restart the game from the beginning if certain items are misused or key actions are missed.
Later in the story, control briefly shifts to Hugo, who is trapped in a separate part of the mansion, allowing the player to solve puzzles from his perspective to aid the overall investigation. The structure is linear, with the player needing to find and use items in the correct sequence and locations to advance the plot. The challenge stems from careful observation of the environment and the logical application of discovered clues to overcome obstacles.
