The player controls Hugo, a character who finds himself in a South American jungle after a crash landing. His companion, Penelope, is bitten by a poisonous snake, setting the primary objective: Hugo must navigate the jungle to find a cure, which involves locating a mystical pool of life and confronting a witch doctor. Progression is structured around exploring static screens, interacting with the environment, and solving inventory-based puzzles. Movement is handled with keyboard arrow keys, while actions are performed by typing text commands, a system also adapted for mouse input in a later Windows release. Key gameplay systems include navigating the hazardous jungle setting, collecting and using items to overcome obstacles, and engaging with characters to advance the story. The game retains the engine of its predecessors while introducing new features such as a turbo mode and an optional hint system.
