Gear Works is a top-down puzzle game released in 1992 for the MS-DOS platform. It was developed by Idea Software and published by Hollyware Entertainment. The game presents players with a series of levels viewed from above, each containing a set of stationary red cogs and a grid of pegs.

In each level, the player's objective is to connect all the red cogs into a single, turning mechanism. This is achieved by placing a limited supply of movable gears, which come in three different sizes, onto the peg grid. The core challenge involves strategic placement to form a complete chain of interlocking gears before an on-screen engine overheats. Progression through the game introduces two antagonists called Poffins; one creature removes pegs from the grid, while the other accelerates the engine's overheating. Players can temporarily neutralize these Poffins by shooting them or by placing a gear directly over their position.

The game's structure consists of discrete levels where the peg layout becomes increasingly incomplete, demanding more careful planning. A timer represented by the engine's heat adds a consistent element of pressure to the spatial puzzle-solving. Upon completing a level, players can access a bonus round modeled after a slot machine, which uses game icons like cogs instead of traditional fruit symbols.
