Descent II is a first-person shooter released in 1996 for MS-DOS. Developed by Parallax Software Corp. and published by Interplay Productions, Inc., the game continues the series' use of full three-dimensional environments that allow movement and rotation in any direction. Players assume the role of the Material Defender, a pilot employed by the Post Terran Minerals Corporation, who is sent on a new mission to remote mining facilities after completing a previous assignment.

The player navigates a spacecraft through interconnected tunnels and cavernous rooms of industrial complexes. The primary objective in most levels is to locate and destroy a reactor core, which initiates an escape sequence. Progression often requires finding color-coded keys to access secured areas. Throughout these missions, players encounter various robotic enemies that must be eliminated using an arsenal of weapons, which can be collected and upgraded. Every fourth level features a boss encounter that must be defeated instead of a reactor. A timer begins after the core or boss is destroyed, requiring the player to find the exit before time expires.

New gameplay elements include the Guide-Bot, a companion robot that assists by leading the player to objectives and can fire flares. It is immune to standard laser fire but can be destroyed by sustained missile attacks. Another addition is the Thief-bot, an enemy that attempts to steal the player's weapons and equipment before fleeing, requiring pursuit to recover the items. The game allows saving at any point, recording the player's precise location, inventory, and the state of enemies and the Guide-Bot.
