Descent is a first-person shooter released in 1995 for MS-DOS. Developed by Parallax Software and published by Interplay Productions, the game is set in a science fiction environment and places the player inside a spacecraft known as the Pyro-GX. The core experience involves navigating through the interior tunnels of various mining facilities.

The player pilots the Pyro-GX spacecraft through a series of maze-like mine levels. The primary objective in each stage is to locate and destroy the facility's reactor core. Following this, a limited escape sequence is triggered, requiring the player to find an exit hatch within forty-five seconds before the mine explodes. Progression through the game is structured as a linear sequence of increasingly complex levels, with enemy artificial intelligence designed to adapt to the player's tactics over time.

Gameplay is defined by its full six degrees of freedom movement system, allowing the ship to pitch, yaw, roll, and translate in any direction. The player engages hostile robots and automated defenses using an arsenal of weapons collected as power-ups within the levels. These armaments include energy-based tools like lasers, a spreadfire cannon, and a plasma cannon, which draw from a shared ship energy reserve. The inventory also features projectile weapons such as concussion missiles, homing missiles, and proximity bombs, which operate independently of the energy system. Exploration and combat are intertwined as players navigate the three-dimensional corridors, managing resources and seeking the critical reactor target in each confined, hazardous environment.
