About Death Rally
Death Rally is a top-down racing game released in 1996 for MS-DOS. Developed by Apogee Software and published by GT Interactive Software, it combines racing and vehicular combat, placing it within the shooter genre. Players begin with a basic vehicle and a small amount of money, aiming to progress through a championship structure.
The player controls a driver competing in a series of races across nineteen tracks. The primary objective is to earn money by finishing well, which is then used to purchase one of six car models and apply temporary upgrades to engine speed, tire traction, and armor. Races involve four drivers, with the winner determined by either completing a set number of laps first or being the last vehicle operational. Gameplay systems include using a limited boost function, collecting track icons to replenish boost and ammunition, and managing vehicle damage. An underground market allows for the single-race purchase of offensive items like land mines and rocket fuel, or the option to sabotage a top opponent's car before a race begins.
Progression is tied to a championship table, with players selecting from three available races of increasing difficulty per event. In addition to prize money, players can earn bonuses for completing races without damage, eliminating all opponents, or achieving win streaks. Optional sponsor missions, such as destroying a specific rival or collecting items during a race, provide further monetary rewards scaled to the player's current vehicle. The final goal is to reach the top of the championship standings and then compete in a special race against a designated adversary.
