Contra is a run and gun video game released in 1988 for the MS-DOS platform. Developed and published by Konami, it belongs to the platform and shooter genres. The game is set in the year 2631, when a terrorist group called Red Falcon takes over the Galuga archipelago following a meteorite impact, prompting two elite soldiers, Bill Rizer and Lance Bean, to be sent on a mission to stop the threat.

Players control one of the two soldiers, navigating through a series of side-scrolling levels. The primary objective is to reach the end of each stage while shooting enemies and avoiding their attacks. The character is equipped with a default machine gun that fires with repeated button presses, and the player can shoot while jumping, a feature not common in many contemporary games. Progression involves moving from left to right, battling through waves of foes. Players can upgrade their weapon by shooting specific flying machines that appear, collecting power-ups that grant weapons like a laser, a flamethrower, a rapid-fire gun, or a spread shot that fires in multiple directions.

The game alternates between two level types. The first is the traditional side-scrolling platform stage. The second type presents a behind-view perspective where the player explores rooms in a third-person format, destroying all enemies and cannons within each room before confronting a boss. Boss characters typically have a flashing weak point that must be targeted. The weapons collected in the side-scrolling sections remain available during these behind-view sequences. The game also supports a two-player cooperative mode, allowing both characters to play simultaneously.
