Conan: The Cimmerian is a fantasy action-adventure game released for MS-DOS in 1991. Developed by Synergistic Software and published by Virgin Games, it is a licensed title based on the character Conan the Barbarian. The game incorporates role-playing elements and presents its world from a side view perspective.

Players control Conan across three distinct area types: an overland map for travel between locations, a town map viewed from a horizontal third-person perspective, and combat or interior screens seen from a vertical third-person angle. A primary activity is exploration, where Conan navigates towns and hidden areas, often entering buildings to search for concealed items. Towns contain various structures such as temples that provide quests, shops for purchasing weapons, and inns where health can be restored. Non-player characters can be spoken with for information, and some can be antagonized to initiate a fight.

Combat occurs in real-time, one-on-one encounters with Conan on the left side of the screen and his opponent on the right. During these sequences, movement is limited to stepping left or right while attacking, as there are no dedicated defensive actions. Fights conclude when the health bar of either combatant is depleted. Victorious players can then search the defeated foe for potential loot. Character progression includes learning new combat techniques; Conan begins with access to only one of three available sword styles, with the others unlockable through training with a sword master found in the game world. Players can also access a character status and inventory screen at any time.
