About Commander Keen 1: Marooned On Mars
Commander Keen 1: Marooned on Mars is a side-view platform game released in 1990 for MS-DOS. Developed by id Software and published by Apogee Software, it is the first title in a science fiction series. Players assume the role of Billy Blaze, a young character who must locate stolen components of his spacecraft on Mars.
The player guides Keen through a series of levels accessed from a top-down map of the Martian surface. The primary objective is to explore these levels to find four specific ship parts required for departure. Progression involves navigating platform environments, reaching an exit in each stage, and occasionally retrieving one of the needed components. The game structure returns the player to the overhead map after completing or failing a level, where they can select their next destination.
Gameplay involves movement, jumping, and interaction with various items and enemies. Keen can use a raygun to defeat certain hostile creatures that populate the stages. He can also discover a pogo stick, which enables higher jumps to access different areas. Other collectibles include keycards for opening locked doors and assorted bonus items that contribute to a score tally. Acquiring enough points grants an additional life. Contact with enemies, projectiles, or environmental hazards results in the loss of a life and a return to the map screen.
