About Catacomb Abyss
Catacomb Abyss is a first-person shooter released for MS-DOS in 1992. Developed by Gamer's Edge and published by Softdisk Publishing, the game continues the fantasy-themed series. It is the initial entry in a trilogy of sequels, followed by Catacomb Armageddon and Catacomb Apocalypse.
Players control a mage who ventures into catacombs and other environments to defeat the resurrected Nemesis and free a terrorized town. The primary objective involves navigating interconnected levels, battling enemies, and locating keys to progress. Gameplay revolves around casting fireballs to attack foes and destroy certain walls, while also collecting limited-use items like more powerful bolts and nukes, healing potions, and hint scrolls. A notable addition is a radar system that displays enemy locations, though its functionality requires finding colored gems, each of which reveals a specific enemy type on the display.
The game expands its settings beyond the dungeon confines of its predecessor, featuring both indoor and outdoor areas to explore. Players encounter new enemy types, such as zombies emerging from the ground and skeletons breaking through walls. While the game does not include a compass, different map regions are identified by distinct names, aiding navigation. Progression is structured through a series of levels where combat, exploration, and resource management are central activities.
