About Big Game Fishing
Big Game Fishing is a fishing and managerial simulation game released in 1991 for MS-DOS. Developed and published by Simulmondo, the game presents a first-person perspective experience where players take on the role of a tourist on a fishing vacation in the South Seas. The core premise involves balancing the sport of big game fishing with the financial necessities of sustaining the trip.
Players begin each in-game day by renting a boat and receiving specific fishing quotas, which detail the types and quantities of fish required to cover expenses like fuel and bait. The gameplay is divided into two main phases. In the managerial phase, conducted in port or on open water, players must purchase equipment such as flares, fishing lines, fuel, and sardines. They also examine weather reports, plot navigation routes on a map, and manage fuel reserves to travel between coastal areas and deeper northern waters, where larger, more valuable fish are found. A distress signal function is available for emergencies.
Once at a fishing destination, the simulation phase begins. Here, players engage in the act of fishing by mounting a line, selecting from five bait types, and manipulating the rod. They can control the boat's speed and throw sardines into the water to attract fish. Successfully catching fish, including species like marlin, swordfish, and tuna, earns money and fulfills the daily quotas. The game features three difficulty levels, allows progress to be saved and loaded, and tracks player achievements.
