About Astrofire
AstroFire is a top-down action game released for MS-DOS in 1994, developed and published by ORT Software. It is a variation on the classic Asteroids formula, where players control a ship navigating a wraparound playfield. The game was initially distributed as shareware under the title Episode One: Into The Storm, with two additional episodes, Whirlpool of Death and Heart of Fire, available upon registration.
The player pilots a spacecraft viewed from above, tasked with destroying hostile craft that replace the traditional asteroids. Movement and shooting form the core of gameplay, with players able to toggle momentum physics on or off, affecting how the ship handles. Progression is structured across distinct episodes, each featuring unique background visuals and enemy designs. Key systems include collecting power-ups, which grant one of two weapon types, and utilizing shields that allow the ship to withstand a single hit instead of being destroyed immediately.
Objectives involve clearing waves of enemy craft while maneuvering to avoid collisions and incoming fire. The game maintains a continuous play cycle of combat and navigation within its enclosed arena. The different episodes provide visual variety and new enemy configurations, though the fundamental mechanics of movement, shooting, and power-up management remain consistent throughout the experience.
