About Alex The Allegator 2
Alex the Allegator 2 is a puzzle solving board game released in 2001 for MS-DOS. It was developed as a contribution to the Allegro Speedhack 2001 event and published by Free Lunch Design AB. The game supports play against a computer opponent or another person locally.
Players control one side in a two player match on an eight by eight grid, taking turns to place colored tiles. The core objective is to finish the game with a higher score than the opponent, which occurs once either player has placed all of their tiles. On a turn, a participant can choose one of two actions: placing a single tile of their color, or sliding an entire row or column by one space. A row or column that has been moved cannot be shifted again on the following turn.
Gameplay revolves around forming and clearing patterns to earn points. When four tiles create a two by two square, they are removed from the board. Successfully clearing six tiles arranged in a rectangle rewards the player with a special yellow wildcard tile, which can substitute for any color to complete a square. Periodically, neutral gray tiles appear at random empty positions; these can only be cleared by using three yellow tiles on them, though this is an uncommon tactic. Points are scored for completing squares of any color, including an opponent's tiles, which adds a strategic layer to manipulating the board's layout.
