A Nightmare on Elm Street is an action game released in 1989 for MS-DOS systems. It was developed by Westwood Associates and published by Monarch Development. The game presents a top-down perspective and is based on the horror film series of the same name.

Players begin by selecting one of five characters, each with distinct Soul and Power meter ratings and unique abilities. The Soul meter represents health, while Power is consumed when using special abilities. The objective is to rescue the character Joey and the other captured friends from Freddy Krueger. The initial phase involves navigating the maze-like streets of Elm Street from a top-down view to locate Freddy's house while avoiding Freddy himself, who appears as a large character and can damage the player's Soul upon contact.

Upon entering the house, the game shifts to exploration across multiple levels. The player must find a path through each level to reach the captured friends, whose locations and remaining Soul are shown on a display. While exploring, players encounter monsters, traps, and various items. Monsters and traps reduce the player's Soul. Items, which are automatically collected into an inventory, include weapons, ammunition, gold coins for purchases, batteries, and objects that restore Soul. Players must select items from the inventory to use or discard them. Power gradually recharges over time, but Soul can only be restored by using specific restorative items found during exploration.
